BREATH ALCOHOL TESTING

Employer workplace testing most commonly utilizes breath alcohol testing to determine current impairment. Here’s how this test works. When alcohol is ingested and reaches your stomach it is absorbed into your blood and carried throughout your body, including your lungs. Alcohol is eventually exhaled through the breath. Ultimately, this test measures how much alcohol is in a person’s breath, therefore indirectly measuring how much alcohol is in a person’s blood, known as their blood alcohol content or blood alcohol concentration (BAC). These tests are performed by our certified and trained breath alcohol technicians (BAT) using an Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) device approved by NHTSA.

Breath alcohol tests are suitable for:
  • Personal uses
  • Legal uses (probation, child custody, etc.)
  • Employers
  • DOT-regulated businesses and individuals
  • DOT-regulated employers must use breath alcohol testing for compliance with DOT alcohol testing requirements.

URINE DOT COLLECTION:

DOT drug tests are conducted only using urine specimens. The urine specimens are analyzed for the
following drug/metabolites:

  • Marijuana metabolites/THC
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines
  • Opiates
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

Some DOT reasons for testing:

  • Pre-employment
  • Reasonable Suspicion/Cause
  • Random
  • Return-to-duty
  • Follow-up
  • Post-Accident

All DOT and NON-DOT Urine tests will be performed by our certified and trained urine specimen collectors. The collector will complete a chain-of-custody form in the presence of the donor collector, they will package the specimen for shipment to our SAMSHA (DHHS) certified laboratory partner for testing. All laboratory-confirmed drug test results are first reported to a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to verify the results before reporting them to an employer. At Good Hope Medical, we can perform an initial screen using an instant test device. Once completed, the collector will allow the device to process, and after a short period, the initial results will be read. Specimens that pass the initial screening test will be recorded as ‘Negative’ and reported the same day to the employer!

A very small percentage of initial instant urine drug tests will be inconclusive and require further testing. If the urine test requires further testing, a chain-of-custody form will be filled out per the employer’s guidelines and the specimen will be packaged for shipment to a SAMHSA (DHHS) certified lab for confirmatory testing using Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) for confirmation testing. Again, all laboratory-confirmed drug test results are first reported to a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to verify the results before reporting them to an employer.
